Lavender has been used for at least the last 2500 years by the Egyptians and Romans. These civilizations made use of this oil as an Antibacterial, Antifungal, Muscle relaxant, Anti-depressant & a Sedative.

The name Lavender comes from the Latin word “lavare,” meaning “to wash,” as it was often used in baths and laundry for its fragrant properties.

Ancient uses and History of Lavender

In the stories of the Bible, lavender was used for anointing and healing.

Romans used lavender for cosmetics, cooking, and purifying the air.

Egyptians used lavender for mummification and as a perfume.

When archaeologists opened King Tut’s tomb in 1923, a faint scent of lavender filled the room.

According to ancient texts, its purposes range from medicinal to religious, having been used to clean cuts and to soothe bruises and skin irritations, as well as to scent the air for spiritual practices.

This incredible plant was dried and put in pipes to enhance the flavour of smoking other herbs.

Lavender is also an insect repellent, earlier it was scattered over stone floors to disinfect and deodorize.

During the World War 1 lavender was used as an antiseptic, and dogs slept on a bed of lavender to get rid of fleas. Farmers used it to disinfect wounds and sores, and to get rid of head lice. Burns healed faster when lavender oil was used, and when it was rubbed on the chest, colds and bronchitis seemed to disappear. Old folks rub it on painful joints and a bag of lavender was worn around the neck to cure headaches.
